Flash Live images to USB (in Linux) using Etcher

Hi Linuxers,

Wanna install a new distro? Struggling to create an installation medium? This tutorial is for you people... Without further delay, let's go!

Flashing Linux images using Etcher

The best tool I've ever used is, Etcher. It's fast and easy to use. I'd always prefer this tool to use in Linux. Visit the above link, and download etcher (appimage) for your architecture.

You'll get a .zip file when you click the download button. Open the zip file, extract it, and you'll get a file with .appimage as the extension. Just double click it. If it doesn't open, then refer to this article from It's FOSS, where the process has been explained in a clear manner.

After launching etcher, you'll get an interface like this:

Select Flash from file, and you'll get a selection menu. Navigate through the folders and select your ISO file.

After selecting the ISO file, then select the target device where you'd like to flash the ISO.

Select the target drive from here.

CAUTION: Data in the particular USB drive will be erased in order to flash the image which you've selected. If necessary, take backups of the data in the USB drive. Be careful while selecting the drive. This process is irreversible (Advantage: Etcher marks the source drive, so that you won't select it).

When you're done selecting, click Flash. Etcher would ask for the administrator password; enter the password; and you're done. Go grab a coffee, and relax for 5 minutes (flashing speed depends on your USB interface type, read and write speed, and the size of ISO).

After flashing the image, you can reboot the computer to get into the Live USB.

I hope this tutorial helps you. If you have any doubts, please drop them in the comments section.

Happy Linuxing :)
